MORNING
AFTERNOON

Morning Session:

  • Start at Tyneham (Early Morning): Begin your day with a visit to the hauntingly beautiful village of Tyneham, preserved as it was left in the 1940s. Explore the village and learn about its history during WWII.
  • Corfe Castle (Mid-Morning): Next, head to Corfe Castle to explore the ruins and the charming village. Enjoy a quick walk around and perhaps a coffee in one of the local cafes.
  • Tolpuddle (Late Morning): Proceed to Tolpuddle to visit the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum. Discover the village’s significant role in the history of British trade unionism.

Lunch Break: Ideally, have a quick lunch in Dorchester or on the way to Milton Abbas, depending on time constraints.

Afternoon Session:

  • Milton Abbas (Early Afternoon): Post lunch, visit the picturesque village of Milton Abbas, known for its row of thatched cottages and serene ambiance.
  • Shaftesbury (Mid-Afternoon): Continue to Shaftesbury to see the famous Gold Hill and enjoy the spectacular views over the Dorset countryside.
  • Cerne Abbas (Late Afternoon): Next, make your way to Cerne Abbas to view the ancient hill figure, the Cerne Abbas Giant, and take a stroll through the village.
  • Finish at Abbotsbury: Conclude your day in Abbotsbury. If time permits, a quick visit to the Swannery or Subtropical Gardens would be ideal, or simply enjoy a relaxed evening stroll in the village.
HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE
  • St Augustine's Well, Cerne AbbasClose to the remnants of Cerne Abbey lies a sacred well, believed to have been established by St Augustine in the early 6th century. St Edwold subsequently established a hermitage at this site. The well is renowned for its supposed healing properties, particularly for eye ailments and infertility.
  • Kingston Russell Stone CircleDating back to the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, the Kingston Russell stone circle consists of 18 stones, all of which have fallen. Set atop a chalk hill, the site offers a spectacular setting; the stone circle commands expansive views towards the sea and the quaint Abbotsbury village nearby.
  • Abbotsbury CastleLocated to the northwest of Abbotsbury village lies an Iron Age Hillfort, encompassing an area of 4 acres. Enclosed within its double ramparts, one can still discern the outlines of ancient huts. The hillfort is situated in a prime location, offering magnificent views across Lyme Bay.
